21 September: International Day of Peace
21st of September 2025 marks the International Day of Peace and invites us to reflect on the importance of peace and harmony in our societies. Although peace is often linked to politics and diplomacy, business plays a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable and just future.
Business directly affects societies and can contribute to stability, reduce inequalities and eliminate the causes of conflict. Through responsible corporate governance, businesses can act as a lever to promote peace, investing in sustainable practices and promoting social cohesion. According to the Global Peace Index 2023, countries with higher levels of social responsibility have a reduced likelihood of conflict.
Promoting peace in business can be achieved through various actions, such as strengthening equality, promoting fair working conditions and supporting communities in vulnerable situations. Businesses that invest in sustainable development, through training programs such as business seminars, strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises through consulting services for small and medium-sized enterprises or promoting green energy, actively contribute to the creation of stable societies.
In addition, companies can act as agents of peace by embedding inclusive values and supporting diversity. A working environment based on equality and cooperation reduces tension and promotes creativity and innovation. For example, multinational companies that adopt transparency principles and cooperate with local communities not only improve working conditions, but also enhance trust and social well-being.
The adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and in particular Goal 16 concerning the promotion of peace, justice and strong institutions, is a key step for any business that wants to combine economic growth with social responsibility. Research shows that investing in actions that promote peace and justice boosts companies’ reputations, increases consumer confidence and contributes to their long-term success.
