Inflation

22 April: Volcker Paul s speech on inflation (1980) anniversary. The importance for business.

On April 22, 2025, it will be 45 years since the landmark speech by Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, which marked a turning point in the fight against inflation. In 1980, the United States was experiencing double-digit inflation, which undermined economic stability. Volcker, through bold policies, highlighted the importance of determination in monetary management.

His strategy included a significant increase in interest rates, which initially caused a recession but eventually managed to curb inflation. By 1983, the inflation rate had fallen to 3%, restoring confidence in the markets. This speech today is a reminder of the need to develop business strategies when economies face crises.

In 2025, managing inflation remains extremely important as many countries face economic pressures following the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. According to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a targeted increase in interest rates and the maintenance of stable fiscal policies remain critical for market stability. Business consultants are key to managing inflation through services such as business strategy and business development.

Business can learn from Volcker’s legacy. In today’s conditions, where inflation affects production costs and purchasing power, adaptability and strategic management are essential. Investments in innovation, more efficient supply chains and cost control can shield businesses against inflationary pressures.

This anniversary reminds us that success, whether at the state or business level, requires determination, strategy and long-term vision, especially in times of uncertainty.
