Micro, Small & Medium-sized Enterprises

27 June: Micro, Small & Medium-sized Enterprises Day

Every year on 27 June, the world celebrates Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day, recognizing the essential role these businesses play in driving economic growth, creating employment, and fostering innovation. Established by the United Nations, this observance highlights the immense contribution of MSMEs to both developed and developing economies. Far from being merely small businesses, MSMEs form the backbone of the global economy and are indispensable to sustainable development.

According to the United Nations, MSMEs account for approximately 90% of businesses worldwide, employ around 70% of the global workforce, and contribute up to 50% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In many developing countries, their contribution is even greater. These enterprises provide livelihoods for millions of people, encourage entrepreneurship, support local communities, and promote economic inclusion by creating opportunities for women, young people, and disadvantaged groups.

Beyond their economic significance, MSMEs play a crucial role in social media. They are often deeply rooted in their communities, providing personalised services, supporting local suppliers, and preserving traditional skills and crafts. Their flexibility enables them to respond quickly to changing market demands, while their entrepreneurial spirit often leads to innovative products, services, and business models. As a result, MSMEs contribute not only to economic resilience but also to social cohesion and regional development.

Despite their importance, however, MSMEs face numerous challenges. Limited access to finance remains one of the greatest obstacles to their growth and long-term sustainability. Many struggle to secure affordable loans or attract investment, restricting their ability to expand and innovate. They also face increasing pressures related to resource management, rising operating costs, regulatory compliance, and the rapid pace of technological change. For many small businesses, adopting digital technologies and developing the necessary digital skills require significant investment and support.

The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the vulnerability of MSMEs. Lockdowns, supply chain disruptions, and declining consumer demand forced countless businesses to reduce operations or close permanently. Nevertheless, the crisis also demonstrated the remarkable resilience of many small enterprises. By embracing digital technologies, expanding online sales, adopting remote working practices, and exploring new partnerships, many MSMEs successfully adapted to unprecedented circumstances. Their ability to innovate under pressure highlighted their importance as engines of economic recovery.

Supporting MSMEs is therefore a strategic priority for governments and international organisations seeking sustainable and inclusive growth. Policies that improve access to finance, strengthen entrepreneurial education and training, reduce administrative burdens, and facilitate digital and green transitions can significantly enhance the competitiveness of small businesses. Investment in innovation, infrastructure, and skills development enables MSMEs to become more productive, resilient, and better prepared for future challenges.

Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of millions of entrepreneurs around the world while recognising the obstacles they continue to face. It reminds us that the future prosperity of national and global economies depends largely on the success of these enterprises. By creating an environment in which MSMEs can thrive, societies invest not only in economic growth but also in innovation, employment, and a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.
